Compare Ottawa solar partners with a builder scorecard for verified roles, comparable work, design responsibility, utility coordination and aftercare.

An Ottawa builder solar partner scorecard should compare documented capability, responsibility and support on the same project brief. A builder needs a solar partner whose responsibilities fit the project. A residential retrofit reference does not establish capacity for a commercial roof, and a polished proposal does not establish who will perform or approve the work. Use the procurement process to resolve those questions.

Ask for the contracting entity, insurance information, named electrical contractor and relevant licence details. ESA explains that Licensed Electrical Contractors are the businesses generally authorized, subject to exemptions, to perform electrical work in Ontario. Verify the ECRA/ESA licence rather than treating a generic “solar certified” label as equivalent. ESA guidance.

Identify who is responsible for structural review, electrical design, roof coordination and required field reviews. Request a responsibility matrix covering the builder, installer, engineer, roofer and electrical contractor.

Request comparable evidence

Ask for examples with a similar building type, roof system and coordination complexity. Contact references about communication, changes, documentation and response to faults, not simply whether the panels were installed.

Review a sample handover package with customer details removed. It should show how the contractor documents the final equipment, commissioning, approvals and service arrangements. Confirm who provides continuing support if a subcontractor or product supplier changes.

Test the delivery plan

Give shortlisted firms the same scope and ask them to identify missing information. Require exclusions, utility responsibilities, schedule dependencies and change-order rules. A bid that assumes away roof repairs or connection work is not directly comparable with one that includes them.

For Hydro Ottawa sites, ask how the firm will manage the applicable DER connection process and keep the builder informed. Confirm the distributor and project path rather than assuming the same process for every building.

Agree service and communication

Define the project contact, escalation route, site coordination meetings and approval of substitutions. Ask how monitoring alarms are handled and which maintenance tasks are included. Confirm warranty responsibilities in the contract rather than relying on a marketing summary.

Score bids on documented capability, scope, delivery risk and lifecycle support alongside price. Incentive assistance can be useful, but no installer can guarantee an administrator’s funding decision. Personalized rebate discovery and address matching in Solenery require premium access through the property flow.

Use evidence fields before weighted scores

Provide shortlisted firms the same brief and record verified evidence, an unresolved question or an exclusion in each row. Essential licensing or scope questions need resolution; an attractive total score cannot cancel a missing requirement.

Selection area Evidence to request Follow-up question
Contracting and electrical roles Legal entity, current licence verification and named electrical arrangement. Who is actually contracted to perform each part?
Comparable delivery Relevant project references and an appropriately anonymized file. What happened when scope or site conditions changed?
Design responsibility Role matrix for structure, roof, electrical and solar interfaces. Who accepts the coordinated drawing and revisions?
Utility and approvals Named submissions, contacts and schedule dependencies. How are pending decisions reported to the builder?
Aftercare Handover sample, service scope and warranty allocation. Who responds if a supplier or subcontractor becomes unavailable?

Test the response to one coordination problem

Give each candidate the same fictional scenario: the preferred roof layout changes after a mechanical revision. Ask how it will identify affected documents, obtain the required technical decisions, price any change and communicate the accepted version to the trades.

The answer should identify responsibilities and evidence, rather than promising that changes never cause delay. Compare it with reference feedback about actual communication and issue resolution.

Finish with a documented selection decision, remaining clarifications and agreed contract scope. If you use weights, set them before reviewing bids and keep the underlying evidence visible. No generic list of “best installers” can make this building-specific decision for you.
